BONES BROTHERS 23

X paused at the bathroom door and used his t-shirt to grasp the knob and open it. The second he did, he froze. “What’s that noise?”

“Where?” Bones asked.

“The noise you’re hearing,” X said. What the fuck was going on there? “Try to remember I’ve been in my cell all day and I have no idea what’s going on, Bonesy,” he bit, already pissed.

Bones scratched a non-existent itch on his jaw and X slapped his hand down. “Don’t fucking do that,” Bones warned.

“Don’t go fidgety with me like a three year old. What’s that noise?”

“Don’t touch me like that again,” Bones bit before saying, “Z wanted to throw a…new house party. Fuck, I don’t know what the fuck it’s called.”

Instant fury made X grit his teeth.

“What?” Bones wondered, as X paced in the hall. “It’s just Reginald, Z, Winter and Sally. And her sister.”

“Oh, is that it?” X seethed. “Just half a dozen people on the night we’re supposed to get this business going?”

“Business?”

X fisted and unfisted his hands, wanting to smash breakable things. “Yes, business, Bonesy,” he snapped, in no mood to deal with his oblivious, virgin-balled demeanor. “We agreed I would come tonight and we’d all talk, remember? Call it whatever you like, but to me, it’s business. Apparently to everybody else, it’s a party.”

“It’s only seven thirty,” Bones said.

“What!?” X came to halt. “Why is it so early?”

“What do you mean?”

“Why did you call me out so early,” X demanded, straining to be calm.

“I didn’t call you out. Did I?”

X took a step back, realizing Bones had not technically called him out, just called him. “I thought you were telling me to come out,” X said.

“I don’t… No, I don’t think I did. If I did it was an accident. How do I call you, anyway?”

“Uh. Hey X. It’s time.” X flopped his arms. “Now I have to endure this shit. What time is it over?”

“I don’t know, I--”

“Of course you don’t. I bet Z didn’t even have a time in mind now that there’s pussy prospect everywhere.”

“I can ask.”

“No, I will ask.” X paced some more, angling his head toward the noise. “Who the fuck is this Sally and her sister?” he muttered.

“Sally? Uhh, she’s… the new owner of some company Z worked with. You would know that better than me,” Bones said.

“I would, yes,” X muttered. “Only I don’t.”

“Z just met her I think.”

“Too many new questions. And a fucking party standing in my way. I don’t do social events, Bonesy, do you understand? I specialize in plotting slow deaths and obtaining the ingredients to do that.”

X tried to calm down at feeling Bones moving for that dark corner he always occupied when Reggie was around. “Look,” X said, attempting a neutral tone with hands propped on his hips. “You’re in charge of the day life now.” It was X’s turn to scratch an invisible itch on his jaw before gesturing to other non-essential annoyances with a hand. “I’m early, I get it. And I do want to talk to you about our operation schedules.
